ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Water and
Power, Raja Pervez Ashraf has asked the nation to be ready
for swallowing bitter Pill as Government would have to increase
electricity tariff in upcoming months. In case of need we
would increase electricity tariff while electricity situation
around the country would be improved by January 31, he told
the National Assembly during question hour on Friday. The
supply of water from Terbela and Mangla Dam would resume
by January 31 after which electricity situation would be
improved, he said, adding that, despite financial crunch,
Government would draw its attention towards atomic electricity
house. Alternate resources are being utilized to overcome
load shedding, he told the lower house. The Federal Minister
went on to say that 5 utilized dam Gas turbine gifted by
Government of UAE to Pakistan would reach country soon from
which 240 megawatt electricity would be generated, he said.
The Plants, he said, would be installed in Guddu, Jamshoro,
Dado and areas where Gas was available. Over 3500-megawatt
electricity would be generated by end of current year, he
said. New Power Plants would also be installed, he said.
Work on 18 Hydel Power stations is underway while work on
Basha Dam would be ready by end of current year, Pervez
said. IPPs have started its work and their dues would be
cleared by June, he said. 8 to 9 years is needed to complete
one Hydel Project but we are trying our level best to complete
them as soon as possible, he said. He further stated that
Turkish Naval ship would start supply of 4100-megawatt electricity
within 180 days. Economic crisis at international level
has affected the whole world but in spite of that we are
moving to achieve our target. Emergent steps are being taken
to overcome crisis, he said. Electricity ranging between
500 to 700 megawatt is being saved through energy saver
while Government would cooperate if any department is willing
to execute bio Gas Project, he said. He told the lower house
Chinese delegation is arriving Pakistan soon because Chinese
companies have interest in Thercoal Projects. Plant generating
electricity through windmill would be ready within 2 weeks
and it would be Government’s historical step, he said.
He told the house 23,000-acre lands in Sindh were given
to different companies on lease so that electricity could
be generated through windmill while 24 companies have carried
out work sincerely and prepared feasibility report. Such
type of projects would be initiated at lands where cultivation
is impossible, he said. Government is willing to generate
nuclear electricity to overcome energy crisis but lot of
money is required in this respect. We have no intention
to put burden on masses but we would have to increase electricity
tariff to run the system, he concluded.—Agencies
