IWC says Pakistan to go to WB for compensation from India
ISLAMABAD: Indus Water Commissioner (IWC) Jamaat Ali Shah said on Wednesday that Pakistan will go to the World Bank (WB) to seek compensation from India for obstructing water flow in the Chenab River and design defects in Baglihar Dam.
While talking to PTV he urged that Pakistan has demanded `water for water’ from India and not a monetary compensation.
He informed that during his recent visit to India both the countries had exchanged data about water flow of the Chenab River adding that, but India did not accept the data compiled by Pakistan, expressing the desire of visiting Marala Headworks to inspect the water flow.
Jamaat said that Pakistan has now conveyed to India for inspecting the site at any time, demanding compensation against water loses and assurance that it would not violate the Indus Water Treaty in future. He reiterated that India has violated the Indus Water Treaty while filling the recently built Baglihar dam on the Chenab River, adding, it filled the dam in 10 days instead of completing the process in the period of 60 to 70 days. Syed Jamaat Ali Shah said water shortage, because of initial filling of the dam, has badly affected the agriculture sector of Pakistan as farmers could not irrigate their fields in time. He said Pakistan has asked India to install telemetric mechanism at the Chenab River and provide data about filling and release from the dam on daily basis.—Agencies
